There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall betting is banned. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 tables.
