Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is banned. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most borders.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau casino, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that features numerous conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
