There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel compound that features a number of comforts aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
